Rioja

Bodegas Campillo

Laguardia, Rioja

"My Grandfather, Eleuteria, established himself in 1861 in Oyen as a grower and winemaker. My father, Faustino, started bottling his own brand of wine, and turned the family activity into a company. From a very early age I joined them at work, learning from the wealth of experience from both my father and grandfather.

In my life of great effort and initiative, I have always dreamed about transferring the concept of the great Chateaux of Bordeaux to Rioja.

It took me twenty years to buy all the pieces of land that nowadays make up the estate. Very slowly and patiently I gathered them and gave shape to my project.

My passion for the countryside and nature, vines and wineries is complemented with my enthusiasm for architecture and building. What better for a wine than to be sheltered in the most majestic of atmospheres?

The moment had come. I had the vines, the means and through my sons and daughters the guarantee of continuity.

The singular winery would be called Campillo like our first vineyard".

The project got underway in 1988 and was inaugurated on 28th September 1990.

Julio Faustino Martinez, Founder

Barrell Fermented Rioja Blanco

2003
White
£6.49

Short fermentation in French oak barrels has produced a good balance between the natural fruit of the Viura grape and the toasted notes from the oak.

Rioja Rosada

2005
Rose
£6.49

100% Tempranillo grapes are "bled" to death to provide us with this most refreshing and elegant wine. They did not suffer in vain.

Rioja Crianza

2000
Red
£9.49

Aged in American oak for seventeen months after an extended maceration process, followed by bottle ageing. In other words an awful lot more time and effort than is usually afforded to a Crianza.

Rioja Reserva

1998
Red
£11.49

The grapes for this wine are hand picked from the oldest vines, the wine is then aged in French Allier oak barrels for twenty months. As elegant and distinctive as the Surrey golfers who enjoy it so much.

Rioja Grandes Reservas

1994
Red
£14.99

The secret here lies with the origin of the grapes. In this case one hundred year old vines with low yields, picked by hand then selected berry by berry. After this painstaking process the wine spends two years in oak barrels, followed by nine years in bottle. Drinking beautifully now, but with time in hand.

Rioja Reserva Especial

1996
Red
£19.99

Indigenous and experimental grape varieties are added to the Tempranillo grapes and microvinified. Aging takes place in the best toasted French barrels. The resultant wine is complex and deep while remaining elegant.

Pago cuesta clara "Raro"

1995
Red
£99.99
Double Magnum

From the traditional Tempranillo Peludo ( hairy ) grape, now extremely rare due to its very low yields. This has made it unpopular with producers, but the ethic at Campillo to resurect old varieties have given us a wonderful wine. The low yields mean greater concentration of aromas, fruit, elegance and quality.

Drink now, and with long life ahead. Fun size bottle too !
