A new addition to our list, Bodegas Valcarlos is the most modern winery in the up and coming region of Navarra. We feel these wines offer a subtle alternative to the wines of Rioja, and represent very good value.

Situated in the Tierra Estella district close to Rioja, the vineyards are the highest above sea level in the area. The chalky soils found this elevated spot enjoy a constantly dry climate. This results in lower vine yields of excellent quality to make wines that are lighter in style but have greater acidity.

Heavy investment in new American oak casks include eight thousand new casks. A unique temperature control system has airflows designated to keep even temperatures for improved maturing of the wines.

Fortius Crianza		2000/01 £6.49
A blend of Tempranillo and Cabernet Sauvignon, aged firstly in new oak, then in bottle. Drinking very well now, particullarly good with Bar-b-Qued food, or on its own.

Fortius Gran Reserva		1998 £10.99
A similar blend to the Crianza, aged for 24 months in French oak barrels, followed by a minimum of 36 months in bottle. A big, concentrated but smooth wine which we feel is a match for many of the more expensive offerings from neighbouring Rioja. Classic Spanish red wine characteristics at a very sensible price.
