Tuscany

Home to what is surely some of the most beautiful countryside, architecture, food and wine to be found anywhere.

So it was with great anticipation that we visited Tuscany during the summer, and with the expert and patient guidance of now local resident Graham Chidgey, former proprietor of Laytons, we were introduced to several smaller estates, each producing quite individual, very high quality wines.

Four wonderful red wines to bring warmth to the coldest winter's day.

"Fonterenza"

2003
Red
£7.99

Campi di Fonterenza, Montalcino

The twins, Francesca and Margherita Padovani, themselves work the three hectares of vines they own at this immaculate, very small estate. This vintage is 100% Sangiovese, aged in a mix of oak barrels and stainless steel.

Rosso di Montalcino

2002
Red
£10.99

Santa Giulia, Torrenieri, Montalcino

A most hospitable, family run estate producing very fine wines. This "Rosso" is from Sangiovese "Grosso" grapes, and spends one year in Slavonian oak barrels. Well structured with a good balance of fruit and oak.

"La Massa"

2002
Red
£14.99

Fattoria La Massa, Panzano in Chianti

Winemaker Giampaolo Motta, something of a maverick, continues to produce fabulous wines from this estate situated on the "Conca d`Oro"..the golden basin at Panzano. This wine is a blend of Sangiovese, Merlot and Cabernet-Sauvignon. Aged in barrels which the previous year aged the world renowned Giorgio Primo. Deep, rich and smooth. A sense of luxury.

Brunello di Montalcino "Sesti"

1998
Red
£24.99

Castello di Argiano, Sant`Angelo in Colle

Proprietor Guiseppe Sesti relies heavily on lunar cycles and biodynamics, which he combines with traditional practices while making his fine wines. This Brunello is matured for four years in medium sized oak "botte", with another year in bottle before release. A very special wine, and a very special lunch ! Drinking well now, with good life ahead.
