Piemonte

Gianni Gagliardo

La Morra, Piemonte

We are delighted to list a greater selection of the brilliant wines of Gianni Gagliardo, who with his sons Alberto and Stefano continue to up the ante in terms of quality and individuality. The vineyards are situated in four areas: La Morra, Barolo, Monforte D'Alba and Serralunga d'Alba. The top wines here, Paulin and La Matta, are only produced in the top vintages reflecting the standards of quality demanded by team Gianni e figli.

First impressions may lead you to think these wines to be on the pricey side, a misconception which will disappear half an hour after the first cork is pulled, or alternatively after a day spent enjoying Gianni's generous hospitality, and absorbing the levels of skill and pride which fashion these wines.

Dolcetto D'Alba

2003
Red
£8.99

A soft, fragrant Dolcetto in keeping with tradition, juicy and plumy on the palate, very smooth.

Dolcetta D'Alba "Paulin"

2003
Red
£11.99

From an old vineyard with low yields, a more powerful expression of this powerful wine. Paulin is the name of the man who taught Gianni many of his skills, and is a homage to that man.

Barberra D'Alba

2003
Red
£8.99

From the Langhe area, a medium bodied, fragrant wine with a refreshing touch of bitterness. These particular grapes are from the Langhe area.

Barbera D'Alba "La Matta"

2001
Red
£12.99

From the clay soils of Bricco Serra dei Turchi, the finest grapes from this old vineyard matured in new wood to obtain concentration, elegance and plenty of fruit. "La Matta" translates literally to "the mad woman", who actually lives in the village of La Morra. This is her favourite wine... mine too. "Dry, well balanced, good body and particular softness" La Matta; the wine or the woman?

Barolo

2000
Red
£24.99

"The wine of kings, the king of wines". The latter half of this statement is open to personal opinion, the first not so. Vittoria Emanuele 11's son by the royal mistress Rosa Vercellana, Emanuele, count of Mirafiori, developed the vineyards around the hunting lodge of Fontanafredds in Serralunga D'Alba. This association with what was then Italy's reigning dynasty has given Barolo a mystique which it has retained to this day. Four starts in a recent Decanter tasting, "Lovely fruit intensity, some chocolate notes, ripe cherry. High acidity, firm tannin, rich fruit structure, full bodied, good length". Drinking well now and will continue to do so for a couple of decades.

Nicola Bergaglio

Rovereto Di Gavi, Piemonte

Gavi is one of the most fashionable white wine regions in Italy, and the Cortese grape rules. Bergalglio's "La Minaia" vineyards lie within this commune and it is important not to confuse the wines with the generally inferior basic Gavi. The wine is fermented in stainless steel and left to rest in bottle before released ready to drink.

Gavi Di Gavi "La Minaia"

2004
White
£8.99

The DOGC of Gavi del commune di Gavi lies on chalky soil and provides the perfect terroir for this grape, producing minerally citrus wine with elegance and finesse.

The North-East

Last summer we introduced an Italian Pinot Grigio to our list as a result of numerous requests for this extremely popular white grape variety and the response was enormous. Pinot Grigio is now widely available from several countries, ranging from the sublime to the ridiculous both in terms of quality and price. We have chosen a fine example from the traditional home of the grape, the north-east of Italy.

Marchesini

Provincia Di Pavia
