Rhone

A selection from the southern Rhone, dominated by the warm, friendly Grenache grape But this is no one-trick pony, as 23 different grape varieties in total make the southern Rhone a blenders paradise, and there lies one of the most important jobs of the wine maker.

A district dominated by herbal scrubland and spice-laden breezes that add to the character of these warm spicy wines. The locals will often lightly chill the reds in summer, and celebrate them in winter with copious amounts of grilled lamb, rosemary and garlic. Lucky chaps.

Chateau De Saint Cosme

Gigondas

We will let Robert Parker do the talking here:

" I was probably remiss in not listing Louis Barruol as one of the wine advocate personalities of the year. He certainly deserves it for single-handedly taking this once reliable estate and pushing it into the stratosphere in terms of quality .... if you have not yet tried the wine of St Cosme, you're missing the boat".

Cotes Du Rhone

2004
Red
£7.99

"Among the negociant wines emerging from the Southern Rhone, there are two Cotes Du Rhone cuvees that consistently represent good value. The deep ruby/purple coloured St Cosme Cote du Rhone (100% Syrah) is a fat, juicy succulent wine offering smoky blackberry fruit, low acidity and considerable corpulence"

Gigondas

2002
Red
£12.99

"He (Louis Barruol) is making blockbuster Gigondas that rivals the finest wines of the appellation. Lusciously fleshy, up-front, fruit-forward Gigondas with oodles of blackberry and cherry fruit, considerable glycerine and admirable purity".
